The tri-county Riley Road wildfire burning in Texas north of Houston was 85 percent contained when the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) instrument on NASA's Terra spacecraft acquired this image on Sept. 12, 2011. More than 19,000 acres and approximately 100 homes have been consumed since the fire started a week ago. The burned areas are dark gray and black; vegetation appears red; and bare ground and roads are light gray. Nearly 21,000 wildfires have...

Images from the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer aboard NASA's Terra satellite, launched in 1999, illustrate the state of gradually decreasing water clarity at Lake Tahoe, one of the clearest lakes in the world. The images are available at: http://asterweb.jpl.nasa.gov/default.htm. In the image on the left, acquired in November 2000, vegetation can be seen in red. The image on the right, acquired at the same time by a different spectral band of the instrument, is...

*Description*:> Thanks to a series of Braille books on astronomy, being blind or visually impaired isn't a road block to understanding and appreciating the cosmos. The author of the books is Noreen Grice, a woman who's made it her life's mission to give everyone access to the universe. In her latest collaboration with NASA, 'Touch the Invisible Sky' introduces the concept of multiwavelength astronomy to give us the complete picture of the origin and evolution of nearby and distant worlds....

These three images of Neptune were acquired 90 minutes apart by the Voyager 2 spacecraft on April 3, 1989, from a range of 208 million kilometers (129 million miles). Several atmospheric features (clouds) are visible. In addition to the dark band encircling the south polar region, a large dark spot extends from latitude 20 S. to 30 S. and spans 35 degrees in longitude. It rotates with a period between 17 and 18 hours. Relative to the size of the planet, the spot's dimensions are similar to...

Chandra image of Jupiter in Alternate Color Scheme. This Chandra image shows X-ray intensity in the units of rayleighs. The observation lasted 10 hours, which was obtained on December 18, 2000, and each X-ray photon has been smeared by double the 0.4 arcsecond full-width half-maximum point-spread-function of the High Resolution Camera.
